A Study on Smoking among Korean High School Students

Abstract
A study on smoking among Korean high school students began in June 1972 with a questionnare to eight hundred and eleven male students from eight different schools by purposive sampling; 4 metropolitan area schools and 4 rural area schools. They are all eleventh grade students. (Age approximately 16-19)
Following are the results of this study through the analysis of data thus collected.
1. The respondents were classified according to smoking behavior into one of the following categories:
Those who smoke(26.5%):
Those who have experienced smoking in the past; (39.8%)
Non smoker(33.7%)
2. Between metropolitan and non-metropolitan area there was no significant difference.
3. Number of cigarettes smoked: one cigarette a day, 17.4%; one pack a week, 16.9%; one pack a day, 5.9%. Almost 2/3 of the smokers(60.1%) are irregular.
4. Student¢¥s feeling of smoking: good taste, 47.9%; Ashamed, 29.9%. proudl, 10.8%.
5. The commonest reasons given for starting the smoking habit were curiosity and the influence of friends who already smoked.(47.8%)
6. Age started to smoke. Almost two-third(60%) of the smoking group commenced the habit before middle school graduation.
7. Relationship of smoking to drinking habits: 58.4% among smokers, 29.8% among non-smokers.
8. Relationship between smoking and school performance; among below average grades group, 71.4% smoked and among above average grades group, 42.7%.
9. Parental knowledge of smoking: parent¢¥s unaware, 44.3%; Mothers aware only 19.0%; Fathers aware also 9.1%.
10. Parental smoking behavior influenced students smoking(68.5%).
11. Knowledge on harmful ingredient in cigarettes: 99.8% of the students knew of nicotine. They were unaware of other poisons.
12. During school life, only 45.7% were taught about smoking. Information sources about harmfulness of smoking: from newspaper, (22.1%); Radio or magazine, (14.5%) ; by School teacher, (42.6%).
13. 65.5% thought that smoking can cause lung cancer, 48.3% believed that it could be related to heart diseases.
14. Two-thirds (62.7%) of students said they would stop smoking if they were convinced that smoking would affect their health.
15. 89.2% thought that smoking is a bad influence to intelligence.
16. Reasons for stopping smoking: main reason 85.9% smoking is dangerous to health.
17. The opinion of cigarettes industry monopoly : agree, 33% and will not agree 55.8%.
